5 Planners Perfect for Writers

Looking for the perfect planner for yourself or a writing friend? Look no further. Here are a few planners made *just* for writers.

There are dozens of approaches to organizing writing, life, and work, and each of these planners offers a unique perspective. Some are dated–specific to 2020–and some are not. Others are tailor-made for a particular type of writing (such as novel-writing).

The Novel Planner: an undated year-long planner available in paperback and PDF. It “includes undated monthly & weekly calendars, project organization tools, achievement trackers, and more”–an all-in-one day planner and project organizer for novelists. And you can buy it in not one but two colors–lovely!

Your Words Count: an undated six-month paperback planner for writers. This planner is perfect for aspiring authors; it is described as “the ultimate guide for the beginning of your writing career.” I *love* this one’s cover.

The Ultimate Authorship Planner: A more business-oriented, dated, year-long, coil bound planner. Created by a writing coach, this planner promises to “apply method to the madness of publishing” with space to plan everything from writing and editing to book launch. This planner is a bit pricier than the rest but looks like it’s packed with trackers and worksheets.

The 2020 Writer’s Process Planner: I’m definitely biased, but this dated year-long planner is AWESOME. It comes in printable PDF, hardcover, and paperback formats, is small enough to fit in your classiest bookbag, and is chock-full of concrete steps to take you towards your goals. This planner is flexible enough to meet the needs of fiction and nonfiction writers, and its trackers are perfect for both longer projects (novels and memoirs) and shorter projects (essays, short stories, and blog posts). Also, it’s designed by a working writer–me.

The Writer’s Workbook: Offering a slightly different approach, this is a paperback project workbook. It isn’t a day planner but helps you plan your book, billing itself as “a notebook of ideas for authors who are in the process of plotting a novel.” It would make a great companion to any of these planners. Another winning cover (I dig typewriters).

What is The Writer’s Process Planner? (& 3 reasons you need it)

What is The Writer’s Process Planner? It’s a few things:

  • A bullet-journal-style planner, with all of the weekly and monthly spreads drawn for you, plus annual trackers to chart your writing days, your mood, and writing-related accomplishments (like pitches to magazines). All you have to do is fill in your tasks and to-do’s, or jot down what you have already done.
  • A day planner for writers, with writing-specific ideas for how to be more productive and happier while writing.
  • A daily affirmation that you are a writer.
  • A cheerleader and a guide to help you figure out what to do next and even how to do it.

Here are three reasons to grab yours today:

  1. Are you doing Nanowrimo? If you grab a hard copy now, it will arrive in about a week…right when you need a reminder about why you though writing a novel in a month was a good idea. (Of course, if you buy the printable, you will get it right away.)
  2. Cross a writer off your Christmas list! It is so hard to shop for writers, because all we need is paper (and maybe that perfect pen). Enter The Writer’s Process Planner. It’s portable, pretty, and affordable. Also, it goes great with that perfect pen.
  3. You deserve it! Writing is hard work, and there are very few things that affirm our writer-hood. You can’t buy a badge or wear a sticker that magically makes you feel like a writer. But you can get a planner that is made just for writers like you–writers who work day jobs, writers who take care of families, writers who write when they are able (and always need more time). Using The Writer’s Process Planner is a daily affirmation that yes, you deserve to be doing this.
